Kangaroo. Pattern Magic Stretch Fabrics

¡Hola señoras y señoritas costureras! ¿Algún señor? ahem! ¿Como va la costura primaveral? Yo ya he decidido que lo que necesito son tops, así que me he puesto a ello a todo correr.

Lo que os traigo no será del gusto de todos, lo sé, pero yo estoy encantada con el libro de Pattern Magic Stretch Fabrics by Tomoko Nakamichi. Me lo paso muy bien jugando al "corta y pega" con los patrones.

De todo el libro este es el que más me llamaba la atención, así que era lo primero de mi lista en cuanto llegara el buen tiempo.

El tejido de camiseta y yo no nos llevamos muy bien, pero en este caso, las terminaciones no han quedado mal del todo

Hello ladies! How is the spring sewing going? 

I have decided I need more tops, so I´m looking for patterns and fabrics.

What I bring you today won´t be to everyone´s liking, I know that, but I just love this Pattern Magic Stretch Fabrics by Tomoko Nakamichi book. I have a great time playing "cut and paste" with the patterns. 

From the whole book this is what got my attention the first time I opened it, so it was bound to be my first make when the warm weather came. 

Knits and me are not the best frinds, but this time the finishes are not so bad

Lo único que me dió un poco de trabajo fué hacer el cordoncillo y las jaretas para introducirlo. Una vez hecho esto, lo demás fué volando.
Una cosita que tuve que añadir fueron las pinzas, por que en la sisa quedaba realmente desbocado. En las fotos se aprecian más arriba de lo que deberían ir, es por llevarlo mal. Las fotos fueron a todo correr antes de las clases.

Making the cord and encasing were the only things that gave me a bit of work, once done, the rest was easy.
I had to add darts. It was really flappy in the armholes.
In the photos they look too high up, but they are not so bad in real life :)

Y la vista trasera del invento. Sirve para disimular las lorzas, ¿no?

And the back side of the thingy. Great for concealing the spare tyres.

Y este es el patrón del Kangaroo, una vez terminado de cortar, retrazar etc. El corte en la espalda es la cintura.

This is the Kangaroo pattern, once I finished playing with it. The slash in the back is where the waist goes.

Pantalones de Setas. Mushroom Pants. What a trip!

¡Hola! En medio de esta locura que es Me-Made-May ´13, me ha dado tiempo de hacerme unos pantalones ¡Sorpresa! Otros pantalones si lo que yo necesito son tops.
La tela es un crepe muy finito, con un estampado de setas. En principio lo compré para la niña, pero no veía que podia hacerle, así que lo usé para mi. Modista egoista, sí.

Hello, ladies! I managed to finish some trousers. Yep, trousers. As if I needed more! 
I made them in a very thin crepe, printed with little mushrooms. I bought the fabric for my girl, but couldn´t think of anything made of crepe for girls so I selfishly used it for myself

El patrón que he utilizado es del Burda 05/2012, número 122. Tambien lo hay en version shorts

La única nota interesante en este pantalón tipo pijama es el cruce del frente. En el patrón está la marca de donde poner el botón, es decir, hasta donde cruzarlo. Este paso es el último. No os fiéis, si os animáis a hacerlo: primero os los ponéis, y el cruce lo adaptáis a vuestras curvas.

The only interesting feature in this pajama style trousers is the crossing on the front. You can find in the pattern the mark where the cross should go, and where the button should be sewn. If you think about making these pants, my advise is try them on first and adapt the crossing to your curves.

Otra cosa sobre el cruce: En las instrucciones dice que hay que cerrar el cruce por dentro. Bueno, yo lo he cerrado tambien por fuera con puntadas pequeñitas, porque si no, al sentarte, se abren, y aunque no se vea nada, pues queda un poco raro.

Another thing about the crossing: The instructions say you have to sew the inside of it. I also close it with little hand-stitches on the outside. If you don´t, as you sit down it opens and it looks weird, and not very lady-like :)

Por último, el largo. Debería haberlos dejado caer más abajo, pero quemé la tela (Si, Lupe, no me recuerdes lo de planchar con trapito) :(
Dado que el agujerito estaba cerca de la base, he tenido que dejarlos así. Pantalones para llevar con zapato plano. La que no se consuela....

Lastly, the lenght. These are supposed to be longer but I burned the fabric. Please don´t tell me about ironing with a cloth, I knooooow! I just forgot ;D
But as the burning happened on the front near the hemline, I just had to leave them like this. 
I console myself thinking they are my flat-shoes trousers.

¡Hola! Pido disculpas por desaparecer no solo de mi blog, si no también de los vuestros. Ya sabeis que me gusta estar al día y comentar sobre las cosas que haceis, pero este mes estoy en el Me-Made-May´13 y el tiempo de una madre trabajadora es muy limitado, como bien sabeis todas, así que me he cogido una vacaciones del mundo blog.
He estado cosiendo, eso sí, y en realidad esto que os traigo está terminado hace más de una semana, pero no había tenido oportunidad de sacar fotos.

Hello! I apologize for desappearing not only from my blog, but also from yours. You know how I like to keep up with your work and comment on your proyects, but this month is the Me-Made-May´13 and working mother´s me-time is very limited, so I took a break from blogging. This list up there is the versions I loved from this trench-coat. I just had to buy the pattern, which I did last year. So many options to choose from, so many details!

Elegí la versión B, la negra en la foto, pero me salió una mezcla entre la B y la A, por que me confundí de marca al cortar el frente. Sin comentarios.

I wanted to make version B, the black one but now I have a mix from B and A. I got it wrong cutting the front piece. No comments :)

Aparte de esta modificación involuntaria, ya puestos le añadí en cinturón y los ojales los hice de sastre, usando en método de Coletterie . No han quedado perfectos, pero ahí están.

Apart from that involuntary modification, I added the belt, and bound buttonholes. They are far from perfect, but there you go!

¿Os acordais que dije que con estos patrones siempre tenía que meter mucho en las costuras para que me quedase bien, y que a partir de ese momento había decidido hacer la talla 10 en lugar de la 12? Pues toma ya, que esta debía ir bien, y mi trench me queda un poco "apretao"

I don´t know if you remember that I said that with these Vogue-McCalls patterns I always have to take in the seams to get a better fit, and that, starting with the next proyect I was going to cut a size 10. Well, I shouldn´t have. The coat is now in the tight side.

¿Y por qué, os preguntareis, me ha dado por hacerme un trench rojo de verano si ya tenía otra cosita muy mona que me ponía un montón porque era muy practica y adorable a rabiar?
Porque la salpiqué con lejía. A quien se le ocurre, andar con lejía cerca de la ropa que te gusta!

And why did I make this one if I had a really cute red summer jacket in the first place? Because I splashed this beauty with bleach. Like a goood splash! I tried dyieng it red again, to no avail.

Bueno, pues este es mi trench. Si alguien sabe de un método mejor para hacer los ojales de este tipo, por favor, no dejeis de indicármelo! Buena costura a todas!

Vogue 1170 The Skirt. La falda

¡Hola a todas! Muchas gracias por dejarme vuestros comentarios en mi entrada anterior. Sois muy amables. Esta vez no he tenido tiempo de contestar. Pensareis que es por la limpieza primaveral, pero que va...es que estaba cosiendo esta falda. (Y tambien fuí a la pelu)

Hello friends! Thank you so much for all your kind words on my last post. I feel less shrimp-like now! :) This time around I couldn´t answer your comments because I was sewing this skirt (and going to the hairdresser too!)

Esta es la falda que va con la blusa. Estuve buscando una tela que me dijera algo bastante tiempo, y creo que esta con flores y abanicos verdes es perfecta. Aunque el patrón de la falda, con tanto corte, me daba un poco de miedo. 

Por supuesto tenía que hacer la falda despues de ver las versiones de Carolyn y the Beth, en los links de aqui abajo

This is the skirt that goes with the top. I´ve been hunting for the perfect fabric for some time until I found it: A touch of colour  on a neutral base with lots of green fans...Perfect! I was a little scared of the print, given that the skirt has so many seams.

But of course I HAD to make it after loving all three of Carolyn´s versions HERE , HERE and HERE, and also Beth´s HERE.

Tal como hicieron ellas, alargué la falda 10 cm. Tuve que meter un poco en las costuras de atrás. Empiezo a sospechar que aunque Vogue diga que yo soy la talla 14 y yo me empeñe en hacer la 12, en realidad tengo que hacerme la 10.¡ Tres años he tardado en darme cuenta!

Just as they did, I had to lenghten the skirt by 10 cm. Also I had to take in the back seams... I´m starting to suspect that although Vogue charts say I´m a size 14, and I stubbornly make a 12 I should make a 10. It took me three years to realize that!

More than 8 meters of bias binding! And the red zipper. It was in my zipper stash so instead of buying a green one I used this.

El bajo de esta falda es otra pieza. Va entretelada para darle más cuerpo al bajo, y acentuar el vuelo (digo yo!) 

The hem is a different piece that is interfaced. That makes the hemline stiffer, which is something I was not sure about at the beginning but now I love

Creo que he cambiado de idea y presentaré esta combinacion al concurso de 2013 Spring Pantone Contest en lugar de top+pantalon verde de AQUI;HERE

I think I might change my mind and present this combo to the 2013 Spring Pantone Contest instead of the top+trousers  from AQUI;HERE. What do you think?

Una cosa que no tiene nada que ver con la costura: He estado viendo los videos de  PIXIEWOO en Youtube y he mejorado un montón en mi maquillaje, y como aplicarlo. Estan el inglés pero son una imagen vale más que mil palabras.

One completely unrelated thing. I´ve been watching some of the PIXIEWOO videos over at Youtube and I´ve learnt tons about make up and how to apply it better. I do recommend them to you!

Vogue 8184. Ballenas a la Vista. Boning!

Es primavera, "ergo" un vestido de flores es una necesidad...absoluta.¡ Después de la falta de color invernal, necesito flores!

Tambien tenía en mente hacer algo que requiriese alguna técnica diferente, así que elegí el patrón Vogue 8184

It´s Spring , therefore a floral dress is mostly needed. After all those months sewing grey I craved flowers!

I was also looking forward to using this pattern specifically because I never sewed boning before: Vogue 8184.

He hecho la versión C sin la banda del escote, no me daba la tela,que es satén de algodón,  y ha quedado un vestido un poco tirando a "pin-up" que seguro que me voy a poner mucho este verano.

I made version C without the neck band for lack of enough fabric, which is cotton satin, and the result is a dress veering on the "pin-up" side that I will probably wear a lot this summer. 

He acortado la falda unos 10 cm, porque el largo más abajo de la rodilla me queda fatal, y también he tenido que meter bastante en la cremallera.

I made the skirt shorter by 10 cm, as the original below the knee lenght was not looking right on me. Also, I had to take in a lot in the zipper area.

El vestido me lo puse a todo correr y se me olvidó poner el corchete de arriba. Es lo malo de las sesiones fotográficas con marido y niños: tienes que llevar la ropa en una bolsita y aprovechar un momento que no pase gente para ponertela. Esta vez estabamos haciendo una ruta, así que la gente me miraba raro. Iba en camiseta y vaquero pero peinada y maquillada como una puerta. El peinado me queda horroroso, como me decía mi marido: ¡Pareces una gamba, todo cabeza!

I put on the dress in a hurry and forgot the hoock and eye. That´s the problem with "photo-shoots" when you are also going for a walk in a semi-wild track with the family: you have to wear the clothes in a bag and wait for the right moment to put all on and take the photos. Some fellow walkers looked very surprised when they saw me in jeans and walking shoes but with the hair-do and my face smeared in make-up. By the way I don´t think this hair-do looks very good on me. As my husband stated when he was taking the photos: You look like a shrimp! All head! 

Pero volvamos a la construcción del vestido: Ballenas.

El patrón pedía ballena recubierta, pero cuando fuí de mercerías me dijeron que lo más aproximado que tenían era esto:

A- Ballena sin recubir, a la que hay que limar para hacer las puntas redondeadas

B- Ballena rara. Se supone que se puede coser por encima de ella y que no hace falta recubrirla. Es bastante más endeble que la A y muy sospechosa...mira como se salen los filitos por arriba. 

Así que usé la A, recubriendola con la misma tela del forro, con espacio suficiente para poder coser el recubrimiento encima de las costuras. 

Back to the dress construction: Covered boning.

When I went to the notions store they only had those two up there.

A- Uncovered boning that you have to file to make the ends smooth and round.

B- Weird boning. They sweared this was the best one, that I didn´t need to cover as I could sew on it, but it looked very suspicious and weak to me.

So I used A and made the covering 3 cm wide, and then sewed it as Vogue intended.

Me encanta el efecto que da al vestido y me gusta mucho mirarlo por dentro :)

I love the effect the boning gives to the dress and I love to look at the inside! :)

Mamma Mia! Peques de Cine

¡Por los pelos!
María de La Loca de la Costura organizó este proyecto, en el cual nos debíamos inspirar en una pelicula, para hacerle ropita a los enanos y recrear, en lo que pudieramos, una secuencia de la misma. El plazo termina mañana, así que oficialmente estoy dentro de tiempo (Soy una obsesivo-compulsiva de la puntualidad, sin remedio)
He tenido algunos contratiempos: dudas, proyectos irrealizables, falta de patrón, falta de tela adecuada, hasta que me he centrado.

In the nick of time! 

Maria of La Loca de la Costura organized this proyect, where we had to make children outfits inspired by a film. The deadline is tomorrow, so I´m oficially in ( big thing for me, I´m very obsessed with punctuality)
I had some drawbacks: doubts, unmakable ideas, lack of pattern or fabric...until I focus and chose the one movie that makes me happy

He elegido Mamma Mia! por muchas razones:
1- Soy fan de ABBA desde que tenía 6 años. No hay nada mejor que conducir cantando a grito pelado la canción de Waterloo, haced la prueba.
2- Mi hija tambien en fan de ABBA. Su fiesta de "graduación" de Infantil fué un monográfico de este grupo.
3- La peli, con Meryl Streep a la cabeza y el resto del elenco tiene un buen rollito que siempre me pone de buen humor. De hecho la pongo muchas noches mientras coso.
4- La ropa que usan durante la película (excepto actuaciones musicales) es veraniega, ponible, y sobre todo hippy y ya sabeis que mi hija tira por ese palo.
5- Mi hijo queria un "bañador de hombre" rojo.

I chose Mamma Mia for many reasons:
1- I´m a huge ABBA fan since my dad first gave me two of their tapes when I was six or seven years old. Singing Waterloo, while driving at the top of my voice is one of my favourite empowering activities.
2- My daughter is also a fan. When she "graduated" from Preschool they had a big ABBA-themed party.
3-The movie with Meryl Streep leading the amazing cast, has the happiest vibe I´ve ever seen on screen. Cheers me up every time, and I use to "watch" it while sewing many a nights!
4- The clothes they wear in the film, except the stage costumes, are very summery, and very hippy-like. Just what my daughter likes.
5- My son who is 5 y.o. wants  "man´s swimming trunks" (Up to now he felt more comfortable wearing nothing at all, and you had to chase him to cover him a bit)

He hecho un popurrí de las cosas que más les podían ir a los enanos para usarlas después. 

I made a pastiche of the garments I liked from the film that they could use later.

Empezando con la niña:
Falda. Amanda Seigfried lleva durante buena parte de la película una falda de batista bordada, de la que yo he hecho mi versión usando estas medidas:

Amanda Seigfried wears this tiered skirt in white embroidered batiste, that I tried to recreate using this measures:

¡Y ella está loca con la falda!

And she is completely mad about it!

La blusa que lleva la actriz al principio de la película es una monada. Toda blanca con el detalle del cuello en azul. He usado el patron Burda Style 07/2011 #143, usando en la medida de lo posible costuras francesas.

The top she wears at the  beginning of the movie is a sweet one. All white with blue details on the neck line. I needed a pattern for this one. I used Burda Style 07/2011 #143. . All seams are french except the sleeves.

Y para el chico, bueno, en la peli no lleva mucho encima, así que le he hecho a Jaime un bañador rojo usando tela de patchwork  y el patrón Burda Style 07/2010 #140, un poco más cortos y con los bolsillos de atras.

For the boy, well, the actor doesn´t wear much in the movie, so I chose the swimming trunks he wears on the beach. I used quilting cotton and the pattern is Burda Style 07/2010 #140, only shorter and with the back patch pockets.

The Pantone Colour Contest

¡Por fin! Las dos piezas juntas. Me parece que pertenezco a otra decada. Perfectamente podría ser mi abuela! (Solo que mi abuela nunca hubiera llevado el pelo tan despeinado, seguro!)

So, here are at last both pieces toguether! I feel like I´m in the wrong decade. This could perfectly be my grandmother! (Only my granny would have never wear her hair so unkept!)

Puede que las dos cositas juntas sean demasiado de alfombra roja, pero me encanta: Que alguien me invite a algún sarao potente ¡ya!

Both items toguether are a little on the "red carpet" side, but I love it! Somebody get me to a party, or the opera or the ballet!

Y puede que tire más para Katherine Hepburn que para Keira Knightley pero ¿Quien se queja?

And I might look more like Katharine Hepburn than Keira Knightely but who is complaining?
