Ganadoras. Winners

The giveaway day is here and I still don´t know how to work any of those fancy methods you use to choose the winners. In my deffense I have to say it is very close to Christmas time, lots of exams to correct, suitcases to prepare, school parties, you get the picture.
So I did it the old-fashioned way: all the names in a vase (I had to TRIPLE check, I must be getting old) an innocent and glittered hand to get five papers.

Chinese thingy given by my mum. At last I found a use for it!

Estas son las ganadoras. The winners are:

Please send me an e-mail with your adress to:

¡Enhorabuena!

One more thing: in a couple of days we are driving up to the north to spend the Holidays with the family. They didn´t ALLOW me to take my sewing machine along (they know me too well)So I won´t have anything worth posting until next year. But I´ll be stalking your blogs!

¡Feliz Navidad a todas las

costureras!

Merry Christmas to all the
seamstresses around the world!

Tutorial Cocoon

We are having a bit of a joke here with the word Cocoon as the spanish translation sounds rude, so we are leaving it as it is.

Now, Do you need to make a last minute present? Something you can sew up in less than half an hour? Here it is. And the best part is that if the recipient of the said present gets bored of it she´ll have more than a meter of almost intact fabric, to make a different thing. Another advantage: you don´t really need to use the sewing machine for it,you can make it by hand (but then you´ll need more time)

The idea is not mine, I´ve got it from my most admired Shams of Communing With Fabric , she makes all kind of funky clothes and her trousers are awesome. You can read her post with the instructions and her two versions of the Cocoon sweater HERE

I´ve only translated the measures from inches to centimeters, so if you allow me, from now on I´ll continue only in Spanish as the English instructions are in Sham´s Blog

Colour Blind Santa. Burda Top 08/2012 #114

When did the peplum became trendy again? two or three years ago? Late as usual here I go and make me one. But when I tried it on I got a bit disappointed, and it got worse when I combined it with something other than the pencil skirt. I ended up looking like a colorblind Santa.

Con falda tubo y cinturón ancho. Vale!
With black pencil skirt and wide belt. Not bad

PicMonkey Collage3
Con pantalones morados y cinturón morado. Mamá Noel
With purple corduroy trousers and belt. Santa´s wife?

With and old crochet collar donated by my mother and no belt. NO WAY!
Another wide belt. It is amazing the number of these I have and never use!

English version (pattern review copy)

Pattenrn Description: (From Burda site)
Simply enchanting, this top with peplum gives a romantic feeling. Lovely contrasts are created with the addition of the lace collar which really makes this top a statement piece.

Pattern Sizing: 34-42

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? The girl in the photo looks quite elegant, I look...weird

Were the instructions easy to follow? Very easy.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I liked the peplum part, the one I really wanted to try, I also like the vertical darts. They kind of enhance the chest area, which is nice for a change
I dislike that the line when the top meets the peplum is very high on the front and very low in the back, so from the side it looks, shall I say this again...weird

Fabric Used: Ponte knit

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: None besides leaving out the zipper, but I should have try to alter the pattern so the peplum started at the exact waist, front and back

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
No and yes, if you like this kind of look
Conclusion:
I was looking for an easy, good looking proyect after the coat I reciently made. I know I will wear this, but I just thought it was going to look better on me. Also this made me rediscover the wide belts!

Tela usada: punto jersey doble o ponte

A Different Kind of Coat

My dog is  cold, or nervous, I couldn´t say. But she starts shivering too often (despite sleeping in the best armchair of the house, next to the fireplace). I took advantage of the sales at Kwiksew some weeks ago and ordered the kind of thing Burda never have patterns for. Like this one.
I like Kwiksew patterns. They don´t come in that flimsy manila paper, like Vogue and the likes. And the lines are very easy to follow. Obviously this was a very simple pattern.

Abrigo negro t 010

I used some more oilcloth, this one has Paris motives, Oh, la,lá! because my dog is chic like that. I made this really quickly, as it was a question of life and death for my daughter to take the dog for a walk with a coat. And there she went, all threads hanging!
kwiksew 3207

Lined with polar fleece, to keep her warm.

Abrigo negro t 020

Sometimes is good to sew selflessly, just to ease my conscience  :)

Seam Allowance Guide Review

I have to admit that when HOLLIE contacted me, I had no idea this device existed, so I was very excited to discover that there was a tool that could actually make my sewing life easier.
From minute one of the said life, I´ve tried all the possible ways of working with Burda patterns, or any kind that didn´t include the  seam allowance. I tried  marking the fabric around the pieces then extra marking around those for the cutting. I tried the eyeballing approach: that went really bad as you might suppose. And what I do right now that is tracing the pattern on the paper then adding the seam allowance to it, which takes quite a long time.
Where was I? Yes. Hollie contacted me and ask me if I could write a review of her tool. I was thrilled! So when the "SAG"(Seam Allowance Guide from now on?) came home I couldn´t wait to use it on a Buda top pattern.
The very clever SAG is a strong magnet that you can attach anywhere you feel confortable on your scissors. There are two in each packet:
The GREEN one for  scissors blades with no slope or to attach at the pivot.
The YELLOW one for scisssor blades with a slope
At   SEAM ALLOWANCE GUIDE you can find all the informacion on how to use it, and as all genius things in life it is quite easy.
My impression after using it: Excellent for straight lines. Needs a little practice at the curves, but after you get the knack of it you are ready to cut anything with a very precise seam allowance
And there is something else: Free worldwide delivery! Thank you so much Hollie!

IMG_4485

Abrigo negro t 030
Before I start going on about the making of this coat, I´d like to thank you for all the suggestions and the good wishes you left me in the muslin entry. Thanks for the help!

Abrigo negro t 029 pm

-He leido muchos tutoriales, luego os dejo los enlaces.

It´s been very interesting. I always avoid sewing thick fabric. My presser-foot doesn´t like it, specially if I want to make button holes. This time I put a lot of effort into it:
-I basted, E-VE-RY-THING!
-I read lots of tutorials, some of them very useful (I´ll leave the links later)
-I realize how important it is to iron with a cloth. And what a pain in the bum, too!

Burdastyle

Sleeve insert
attaching the sleeve

Y me lo he pasado pipa cosiendolo.

ENGLISH

Pattern Description: (From Burdastyle.com)

This lovely coat is from designer Gabriele Strehle who’s work is based on purity, clarity, and

naturalness. The little black coat for everyday wear. Double-breasted, slightly flared, with perfectly

shaped section seams and classic two seam sleeves. The patch pockets with rounded flaps make lovely

additions

Pattern Sizing: 36-44

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes, mine is black too.
Were the instructions easy to follow? Surprisingly good for Burda. I followed them religiously except for the button holes.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I like the simple lines, the double brest (reminds me of a sailor coat) the lenght, the sleeves. The collar is quite clever too. It is a two piece collar that looks like it is single. The least favourite feature are the pockets

Fabric Used: Brushed wool (with a percentage of polyester) Cotton for the lining, piping for the pockets and flaps. Buttons

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I made bound button-holes and I enjoyed learning how to make them. I used the Coletterie method. I think it is quite smart: The squares for bounding are cut on the bias, then ironed so they are not too bulky.
I also piped the pockets and the flaps. From previous expeciences I knew the lining was going to show in some places if I didn´t

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I don´t think I´ll sew this again, but I recommend it whole-heartedly

Conclusion: Love my new coat! I know I´m going to get a lot of wear from it, and most importantly I´ve enjoyed a lot making it!

Black coat, back

Para coser los botones usé ESTE método.
To sew the buttons I used THIS method.

Espero que os haya gustado. Un besito.

Hope you liked it. Love

One Lovely Blog Award

¡Hola!

Hello! Carolyn of handmadebycarolyn has awarded to me the One Lovely Blog Award. Thank you so much!
Usually I try to avoid writing award posts, too much thinking for my one-cell brain. But this time I need a break from the coat, and sit with a tea mug (I like big mugs) so there you go.

The rules for the One Lovely Blog Award are as follows:
  • Thank the person who nominated you and link back to him/her in your post.
  • Share 7 things about yourself.
  • Nominate 15 bloggers you admire.
  • Leave a comment on each of these blogs letting them know they’ve been nominated.

2-He vivido en 14 casas diferentes.
Pues no mucho.

My seven things:
1- I´m left-handed except for writing and drawing.
2- I´ve lived in 14 different homes (periods of 6 months or more, that is) I´m pretty good at "moving"
3- I love languages, a lot and all of them
4- I´m a lousy cook. My husband bought me this Thermomix device because he was afraid of dying from starvation. It didn´t make much difference.
5-My favourite book and my favourite musical is Les Miserables.
6-I had a phone call telling me I was expecting a boy when I was visiting the Roman Forum. I spent some days thinking whether I should name him Octavius or Faustinus. When I set foot on Spain again those ideas disolved into thin air and name him Jaime (James) instead.
7- I love Liza Minelli, and can sing all her songs (Dance to them, too)

My nominees are:

Amaya de Costurera Novatilla

Lupe de Lupecienta
Ana de Que puedo hacer con esto?

Somebody give me another award quickly! I need to keep on sharing these things!

Nos vemos prontito, con abrigo nuevo....espero!
See you soon, hopefully with a new coat on!
